Traveling Tips
Mexico has much to offer the traveler. Highways have improved immensely in the last few years. Toll roads are a much faster means of traveling, and a way to avoid heavy, slow truck traffic.
Helpful Hints
Wherever you cross into Mexico you must have a Mexican tourist card and a vehicle import permit.
A passport is required in order to obtain a tourist card.
To acquire a vehicle import permit, you require a credit card and ownership papers.
If you do not have ownership papers, you must have evidence that you are allowed to take the vehicle into Mexico.
Your American/Canadian vehicle insurance does not cover you in Mexico. Mexican insurance may be bought at any major border crossing or over the Internet. See the 'Links' page for further information.
Money Matters
Mexico is much more of a cash society than Canada or the USA. Most toll booths do not take credit cards. A very few gas stations have ATMs, and most do not take credit cards. When you enter Mexico you need cash, preferably in pesos. At the Laredo crossing, there is a currency exchange, but the banks in the city of Laredo give a better rate. ATMs are quite easy to find in Mexico.
PETS:
Traveling to Mexico with a pet should present no problems. Be sure that your pet has up-to-date shots. Many people travel to Mexico with their cats and/or dogs. I have never heard of anyone encountering problems. Most campgrounds accept pets. As in Canada and the USA, there are rules about pets. Dogs must be kept on a leash, and must not be left alone in your trailer. Larger centres have vets; their prices are very reasonable.
FOOD and OTHER NECESSITIES:
Almost everything that you enjoy in Canada or the USA can be bought in larger centres in Mexico. Costco, Sam's Club can be found in many Mexican cities. Products like peanut butter are more expensive in Mexico than in USA or Canada. Delicious fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available and, at wonderful prices. Mexico is a shopper's dream. Markets, street vendors, and large department stores provide an amazing array of wonderful things to buy.
MEDICAL SERVICES:
Dental and optical services are such a good deal that people go to Mexico for these services.
